You are a 12th century noble and you have control of a small army of mercenaries. There are other nobles who would love to see you fall, thereby having your power and land distributed amongst them. You hire mercenaries to protect your land and your name's honor. You must train them, buy them weapons and armor, and turn them into an experienced group of fighters. It is by doing this that you will gain the recognition and placement in society that you deserve.
